Demand Gen Ads Management

Demand Gen Creates Demand. It Will Not Look Good In A Last-Click Report.

Most Demand Gen campaigns get cancelled around week six, because somebody judged an upper-funnel campaign with a bottom-funnel metric. We set the measurement up before the spend, so the decision to scale or stop is made on something real.

Measured on incremental contribution and assisted conversions, not last click alone

Performance Max Captures Demand. Demand Gen Creates It.

These two overlap on placements, which is why they get confused constantly. The audiences they chase are completely different, and that difference decides how you build, budget and judge them.

Performance Max

  • Captures existing demand at the bottom of the funnel
  • Runs across Search and Shopping as well as visual surfaces
  • Under tight efficiency targets, most spend goes to Search and Shopping
  • When it does appear on visual inventory, it is usually remarketing
  • Judged on CPA and ROAS

Demand Gen

  • Generates demand in the mid and upper funnel
  • Does not serve on Search or Shopping at all
  • Reaches people who do not yet know they want what you sell
  • Fills the funnel that Search captures from next quarter
  • Judged on incremental contribution, not last click
If somebody sold you Demand Gen as a cheaper way to get the conversions Search already delivers, they sold you the wrong campaign type.

Six Surfaces, Chosen Deliberately

Demand Gen is not a video product and it is not a Display product. It is one campaign type with channel controls across Google visual inventory. Most accounts buy the whole bundle by default. We choose.

YouTube

In-feed, in-stream and Shorts

The largest surface and the one people think of first. Strong for demonstration, before-and-after, and anything where showing beats describing.

Connected TV

Shoppable big-screen attention

Shoppable CTV arrived in the January 2026 Demand Gen drop. It deserves a controlled test when the offer is visual and the sales journey benefits from screen time.

Discover

Feed reach while people browse

High-volume feed placement. It works when your creative earns attention on its own instead of relying on declared search intent.

Gmail

Lower volume, strong intent windows

Often useful for remarketing and warmer audiences, especially when the message is specific and the offer has a clear next step.

Google Maps

Local discovery with real geography

Promoted pins are now part of Demand Gen inventory. Useful for retailers, restaurants, clinics and service businesses with a physical catchment.

Google Display Network

Display inside Demand Gen

Display-only serving is still possible, but the campaign shell is moving into Demand Gen. GDN needs to be chosen and measured deliberately.

Channel controls mean you can run this as a YouTube-only campaign, a Maps-focused campaign, or a Display-only campaign. Which surfaces you buy should follow from where your customers actually are, not from the default settings.

Why Most Demand Gen Campaigns Get Killed Before They Work

This is the highest-risk part of the campaign, and it happens before the first dollar is spent: nobody agrees how the campaign will be judged.

Somebody sees your ad in the Discover feed. They do not click. Two days later they search your brand name and convert.

In a last-click report, your brand Search campaign takes the credit and Demand Gen shows almost nothing. Six weeks in, it gets paused for underperforming, and the demand it was creating quietly stops.

This is the most common reason Demand Gen fails, and it is a measurement failure rather than a campaign failure.

Set before spend

Engaged-view conversions tracked and reported
Assisted conversion and path reporting reviewed
Branded search volume monitored as a leading indicator
An agreed judgement window set before launch
Incrementality tested by pausing and measuring what changes
We agree how the campaign will be judged before it launches. That conversation is uncomfortable and it is the main reason these campaigns survive long enough to work.

Demand Gen Is A Growth Channel. It Comes After Efficiency, Not Before.

We work bottom-up. Establish efficiency where intent already exists, expand into consideration, then invest in awareness. Skipping to the top of the funnel before the bottom is maxed is the expensive sequencing error.

Likely your next move if

  • Search and Shopping are hitting targets and limited by demand rather than budget
  • Your product is visual: fashion, beauty, food, property, fitness, interiors
  • Customers take time to decide, so presence during research matters
  • You have real first-party lists to build lookalikes from
  • You have genuine creative, or budget to produce it
  • You are entering a market where nobody searches for you yet

Wait if

  • Search is still losing impression share to budget
  • Conversion tracking cannot be trusted
  • You have no first-party data and no creative
  • You are B2B with a narrow audience where LinkedIn is a better fit
  • Nobody in the business will judge it on anything other than last click

How We Build Demand Gen Campaigns

Demand Gen behaves closer to a paid social channel than a Search campaign. The account still needs bidding discipline, but the real levers are data, creative, channel selection and measurement.

01

First-party data first

Lookalike segments built from customer lists, high-value purchasers and converted leads instead of broad affinity categories that go wide and convert badly.

02

Channels selected, not defaulted

Each surface switched on or off deliberately, based on where your audience is and what your creative suits. Reviewed as performance data arrives.

03

Creative as the actual lever

Several angles running at once, formats matched to placement, refreshed before fatigue rather than after. Creative quality moves Demand Gen performance.

04

Bidding sequenced to data

Maximize Clicks while conversion volume is thin, Maximize Conversions once tracking is solid, then a target once volume genuinely supports it.

05

Optimized targeting decided

Useful for conversion-goal campaigns when scale matters. Turned off for tightly controlled remarketing where precision beats reach.

06

New inventory tested properly

Connected TV and Maps get defined budgets, defined reads and clear stop rules instead of being hidden inside a blended campaign number.

Demand Gen FAQs

What is the difference between Demand Gen and Performance Max?

Performance Max captures demand that already exists, running across Search and Shopping as well as visual surfaces. Demand Gen generates demand in the mid and upper funnel and does not serve on Search or Shopping at all. They overlap on placements but chase different audiences, so they need different budgets, creative and success metrics.

How do I run YouTube ads now?

Through Demand Gen, in most performance-oriented cases. Demand Gen covers YouTube in-feed, in-stream, Shorts and connected TV, with channel controls that let you run YouTube-only if that is what you want. Separate video campaign types still exist for pure reach and awareness buying, but for performance-oriented YouTube work, Demand Gen is now the main conversation.

Is Demand Gen replacing Display campaigns?

Google Display Ads campaigns are moving into Demand Gen as the Google Display Network. You can still serve exclusively on Display using channel controls, but the campaign shell and workflow are changing. That means existing Display campaigns should be reviewed before migration instead of blindly moved.

How do I measure Demand Gen properly?

Not on last click alone, which is what kills most of these campaigns. Track engaged-view conversions where video assets are running, then look at assisted conversions, conversion paths, and whether branded search volume rises while the campaign runs. The measurement plan should be agreed before launch.

How long before Demand Gen shows results?

Longer than Search, because you are reaching people earlier in their decision. Agree the judgement window before launch and make it long enough to cover your real consideration cycle. Six weeks of last-click data against a ninety-day sales cycle tells you very little.

Does Demand Gen work for B2B?

Sometimes, but be careful. Narrow B2B audiences are hard to reach on Google's visual networks and LinkedIn often reaches those buyers far more efficiently. Where Demand Gen does work in B2B it is usually for broader categories or well-known problem spaces. We will tell you honestly which side you fall on.

Can I run Demand Gen on Google Maps only?

Yes. Maps is available through Demand Gen channel controls, subject to the right location setup. For retailers, restaurants, clinics and service businesses with a physical catchment, that is a genuinely useful option worth testing with a defined budget and read.

What creative do I need?

It depends on the surfaces you select. Vertical video for YouTube Shorts and in-feed, landscape for connected TV, strong static images for Discover, Gmail and Display. Several angles should run simultaneously rather than one asset, refreshed before fatigue. Creative moves Demand Gen performance more than most people expect.

Should optimized targeting be on or off?

On for many conversion-goal campaigns where scale is the goal and the conversion data is reliable. Off for tightly controlled remarketing where precision beats reach. The important part is that it should be a decision, not whatever the default happened to be.

What budget does Demand Gen need?

Enough to reach a meaningful share of your audience repeatedly. A budget that reaches a fraction of the audience once will not generate demand; it will generate a report showing nothing happened. We will tell you the floor for your market before you commit to it.
